1. RSCA Yard Sale- May 15th. Register NOW!

The Regent Square Yard sale is scheduled for May 15th, 2010. "Official" hours are from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm, rain or shine. Last year was a busy year for The Square, we had shoppers that traveled form Erie to join us. Restaurant's were packed with people and neighbors were out wheeling and dealing for some extra money. This year clean out your attic and your basement and join us.

Register by May 10th to be included on the map and list of "hot" items, which will be distributed to shoppers and posted on the internet before the sale. The more registered participants we have the more we can do the following:

E List Items on the "hot" list to attract shoppers
E Collect and pay for signage and supplies
E Tout community participation for grants and outside support

Look for a postcard in the mail with a registration form. Simply fill out the card included with this letter and then you can either drop off your registration at the Wilkins School Community Center at 7604 Charleston Avenue (drop it in the drop off mail slot) or mail it back in the envelope provided.

2. RSCA Membership

Regent Square is a true neighborhood with great community activities, a thriving business district, safe places to walk and play and beautiful trees. The RSCA is a driving force behind this community and we ask that you support our efforts by becoming a member for the 2010 calendar year.

The RSCA membership dues enable us to: print the newsletter, maintain the RSCA website, organize the annual yard sale, obtain grants for community improvements, install improvements (such as the recently installed trash cans along South Braddock), host childrenfs activities, create and deliver a Welcome Packet, improve safety, provide neighborhood-specific input at zoning meetings and more.

3. Frick Park Red Clay Tennis Courts 2010 Season Highlights

Free and Open to the Public! Court Opening Block Party, Friday April 23, 2010, 5PM to Dusk and the French Open Tennis Celebration, Saturday May, 29, 2010, 1PM to 5PM.

The Frick Park Red Clay Tennis Courts will open with the 2010 Season and Court Opening Block Party on Friday, April 23, 2010, 5PM to Dusk. Members, prospective members, neighbors, friends and fans Frick Park, ALL are welcome! This annual spring event is free and open to the community and features free clinics and games by local tennis coaches and volunteers, for adults and children of all ages and playing levels. The event is dedicated to club volunteers who help restore, maintain, and improve the clay courts and facilities. Last year's total attendance of 200 people included many who enjoy not just playing tennis, but also watching the sport on such a unique setting. This year the courts feature new fences and a new exhibition court.

A festive atmosphere will also fill the red clay courts during the 3rd Annual French Open Tennis Celebration, Saturday, May 29, 2010, 1PM to 5PM. This block party features the very popular Classic Wood Racquets Tournament. Wood racquets are provided for players to celebrate the outstanding tradition of tennis at Frick Park, which has hosted tennis events since these outstanding clay courts were constructed in 1930. This free and open event features exhibition matches as well as free clinics, games and prizes for adults and children of all ages and playing levels. Red clay is a soft and forgiving surface that brings together players of all ages. ALL are welcome!

The New 2010 Red Clay Season features Free Beginner Adult and Children Quickstart Clinics on Sundays (June to September), the USTA-Sanctioned Frick Park Red Clay Junior Open Tournament for Boys and Girls 14 and Under (June 28-July 4), the Citiparks-sponsored Paul G. Sullivan Clay Tennis Championships (July 14-25), club member leagues and ladder for all playing levels, as well as USTA and PTR workshops for coaches.

5. LAWN BOWLING SEASON

Nothing says the arrival of spring like a new season of lawn bowling in Pittsburghfs Frick Park.

Frick Park Lawn Bowling Club (FPLBC) has been a neighborhood fixture in Pittsburghfs East End since 1939, welcoming bowlers of all ages and experience. For those who have never tried the sport, FPLBC will hold an Open House on Saturday, May 15 from 10:00 to 3:00 PM. Lessons are free, children are welcome and encouraged to bowl, and refreshments will be provided by the Club.

Frick Park Lawn Bowling Club is located in the 7300 block of Reynolds Street, in the Point Breeze section of Pittsburgh, across the street from Frick Art and Historical Center.

In addition to its annual Open House, the Frick Park Lawn Bowling Greens will host this yearfs North East Division Open from Saturday July 24 to Thursday, July 29th. "This is a great opportunity to see top-notch lawn bowlers in action," said Ed Gannon, club president and Point Breeze resident.

For Jesse Sharrard, 32, a lawn bowling club member for the past three years "therefs nothing better than being outdoors bowling on a beautiful summer night." A demonstration chef at the Le Cordon Bleu Institute of Pittsburgh, Sharrard became hooked on lawn bowling when he attended his brotherfs lawn bowling bachelor party in Central Park. "We had a chance to hang out and play a fun game and be outside enjoying a great summer night. When I got back to Pittsburgh, I was excited to find out that there were greens in Frick Park and I could play on a regular basis." said Sharrard, who joined FPLBC shortly after.

Frick Park Lawn Bowling Club members have regular league bowling on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings.The club is always looking for new members and encourages anyone with an interest to visit the lawn bowling greens, watch a match and take a free lesson the club offers all newcomers.

In addition to tournaments throughout the season, which runs from May to September, the club hosts a ethird Thursday" evenings for young people interested in trying lawn bowling. Tournaments, special events and general pick up games are posted on the club website at www.lawnbowling.net. Small groups or organizations interested in hosting lawn bowling events can contact the club for information and fees.

6. WSCC Annual Book and Plant (and now) Craft Sale May 15th and May 16th

This sale is not to be missed and should definitely be the first stop in your rounds of the garage sale event. Books are plentiful and cheap, with small paperbacks starting at 50 cents and trade paperbacks are only $1.00.

Pick up NYT notables children's books, cookbooks and more. Sunday a bag of books will sell for $2.00 each. On Saturday only, local organic growers will be selling both popular and unusual herbs and vegetable plants of many varieties. Come early, stock sells quickly. Marge Mimless will be offering her delicious fare at oh-so reasonable prices. See what she is cooking up this year. New this year, artisans and crafters will be selling their wares.

It is not too late to donate books. Books in good condition can be left between the sets of front doors of the WSCC. Receipts can be provided upon request. Please, no textbooks or encyclopedias. For more information, please call 412-244 8458 or email wsccpgh@yahoo.com.

7. Personal Training Now at the WSCC

The WSCC is please to announce certified personal fitness instructor, Jackie Omotalade, will offer additional classes at the center. Her functional/athletic and fun style fitness training programs are very intense and progress differently for all fitness levels. Jackie O. trains people at all levels of fitness with incredible intensity for amazing results. New classes at the WSCC include Boot Camp 412 and TurboKick. Boot Camp 412 can sound intimidating for some, but anyone who has the desire to make a positive change in their health, fitness, and well-being can do it at BOOT CAMP 412. Due to popular demand Total Body Makeover will add an extra day and change the time to 6:30am to help accommodate early start times at work.

8. Cub Scouts in Regent Square - summer signup

Cub Scout Pack 23, which meets at the First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood, will be holding its spring signup on Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at the church. The Cub Scouts is for boys in 1st-5th grades, or ages 6-11, and focuses on outdoor activities, service, and citizenship, as well as having fun. Cub Scout activities do not end with the school year. We have an Adventure Base in June, day camp in July, and other activities. Cost to register is $30, and includes a subscription to Boys' Life, the Scouting magazine. Celebrate the 100th year of Scouting in America with Pack 23.
