BUSINESS NETWORKING GROUP

The Business Networking Group is open to all Regent Square business owners. The group provides an opportunity for the businesses in our neighborhood to work together to maintain and improve our business climate. We do this through working together on such initiatives as the Day of the Dead festivities; holiday lighting in the business district; and streetscape improvements, such as having parking lines painted and trimming the trees.

COMMUNICATIONS

General and Business Email Lists: Individuals may subscribe/unsubscribe to one of several email lists on our website. Email is sent by a volunteer when a committee and/or Board chair indicates a need for one to be sent. Person volunteering for this task must be willing, for some lists, to send out more than one message (AOL seems to filter out our general emailing). This is an important, but not a time-consuming task!

Newsletter Production:Producing the RSCA Newsletter is truly a community effort. Volunteers help to seek and write articles; select, prioritize and edit them; layout the selected articles; and proofread the final copy before sending it to the printer. The RSCA invites residents, local businesses and non-profit organizations to submit articles and events of interest to the Regent Square community.

Newsletter Distribution: The RSCA newsletter is issued 10 times per year, and is distributed to every resident in the community by volunteers. Copies are first delivered to Zone distributors, who then deliver to about half a dozen Block distributors, who then deliver to the homes on their blocks. The list of volunteers is maintained by a coordinator. Delivering takes about 20 minutes and you get a nice walk. Volunteering is easy - just send us an email.

Website: Volunteers are needed to help maintain and update the RSCA website. If you are interested in working on or contributing to the website contact website @ regentsquare-rsca.org. No experience with website authoring is needed, If you would like to learn how to create and edit a website, this opportunity is for you.

EVENTS

Easter Egg Hunt: Text Needed Here!

3 Rivers Film Festival: The 3 Rivers Film Festival, an event produced by Pittsburgh Filmmakers, is held annually in November. Celebrating nearly 30 years of bringing new and interesting movies and documentaries to Pittsburgh, the Festival is held in three locations, with Opening Night and other celebratory events held at the Regent Square Theater. Volunteers from the community usually assist in sales and other tasks as needed. A meeting of volunteers with Filmmakers staff prior to the opening of the Festival ensures that events run smoothly. Look for articles requesting volunteers in the RSCA Newsletter in the Fall.

Holiday Toy Drive: Each year the Regent Square community comes together and generously donates toys and books for the December holiday season that benefit children from neighboring communities. The past few years we have collected almost 100 gifts each year, and have donated these to a multi-purposes organization in Wilkinsburg, which serves thousands of children, youths and adults each year with quality health and human services in the areas of early childhood education, youth recreation, tutoring and mentoring, youth and adult technology training, workforce development, health and dental care and permanent supportive housing. The organization has a holiday party each year at which our donations are distributed to extremely appreciative and deserving children and families.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership Recruitment: Every year, the Membership Committee asks Regent Square residents and business owners to support initiatives that help maintain and improve the quality of life in our neighborhood by becoming members of the RSCA. Committee members also track these memberships, create and distribute membership materials, write membership-related articles for the RSCA newsletter, and represent the RSCA at community events. Your help in these activities would be most welcomed.

Open House/Annual Meeting: At the end of the RSCA's membership year, the RSCA sponsors its annual Open House, where area residents and business owners get a chance to meet and mingle and to hear about what the RSCA is doing and what is going on in our community. This committee organizes the event with the assistance of the RSCA Board. Your new and fresh ideas for making this a fun event would be most welcomed.

Welcome Booklet/Packet: If you buy a home in Regent Square, an RSCA volunteer will deliver to your door the RSCA Welcome Packet - a tote bag filled with literature on local organizations and promotional materials from area businesses. In this packet, you will also find the RSCA’s Welcome to Regent Square business directory. Every other year, volunteers contact every business and organization in Regent Square to update and reprint this directory. They also gather the materials and stuff the packets. Do get involved in this effort to welcome your new neighbors and future friends!

NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENTS

Braddock Avenue Corridor: Text Needed Here!

Citizens Against Litter - Regent Square: The Citizens Against Litter of Regent Square is a group of individuals who work collectively to patrol the streets of the neighborhood for litter. There are no meetings to attend or dues to pay because the only thing we really need is a short amount of your time regularly. The Square has been broken down into manageable zones to patrol, and we welcome anyone committed to the cause of keeping our streets free of trash.

Parkway Interchange Litter Cleanup: We meet four times/year to pick up litter on the Edgewood/Swissvale interchange of the Parkway East. PennDOT supplies orange vests, gloves, and garbage bags. I supply water and cookies. You need to dress for the weather and dress to get dirty. We work for about two hours and make a big pile of garbage bags (and other assorted stuff that we find) for PennDOT to pick up. It's not hard work - but there is lots of bending over. Some folks are using the Nifty Nabber from Home Depot - no more bending over. Come out and join us. We have our own kind of unique fun - and the interchange looks a lot better when we're done.

Gardens - Richmond/Sanders: Help the neighbors maintain the planting area at the open field corner of Richmond & Sanders Streets. This group plants perennials and annuals in the spring, arranges for neighbors to weed throughout the summer, and adds spring-flowering bulbs in the fall. If you are interested in gardening, join the committee for the Richmond/Sanders effort or help plan other beautification projects in Regent Square.

Tree Planting: We are planting trees along Braddock Avenue in order to beautify the neighborhood and slow down traffic by creating a “green tunnel.” We hope to finish this part of the project with a final planting in Fall of 2007. We also prune, mulch, and keep an eye on the trees in the business district. In addition, we work with surrounding communities and the Nine Mile Run Watershed Association on other tree-related activities.
