Neighborhood Development
Holiday Tree Lighting – December 2007 to present - In 2007, the RSCA Business Networking Group started a new tradition during the holiday season: lighting the trees in the main portion of the Braddock Avenue business corridor. The lights are set stay on from late-November thru early April to brighten those dark winter nights and bring attention to the business corridor. The RSCA wants to thank the following businesses that have sent in contributions to this effort to date:
Many businesses also decorate their storefronts for the holidays, making the business district even more cheerful. Special thanks also go out to them. Additional funds will be needed to reinstall and take down lights each year, as well as replace any broken lights. To make a contribution to this effort, please send a check to: RSCA Lights, 7640 Charleston Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218 (payable to RSCA – Lights). Donors’ names will be added to the list above. Tree Planting – Fall 2005 to present - In Fall 2007, the RSCA Tree Committee completed a project to beautify Braddock Avenue by planting trees. This effort will also work to slow traffic on this busy street by creating a "green tunnel" effect and by reinforcing the impression that this is a neighborhood where people live. To date, they have planted 38 trees and 500 daffodil bulbs. They also pruned and mulched trees in the Business District. The Tree Committee will continue to monitor and prune these trees over the next several years, and will do more planting as funds become available. Braddock Ave. Design Charrette – November 5, 2005 - As an intiative of the RSCA Business Networking Group, business owners, residents and friends of Regent Square and the RSCA spent six hours indoors on a beautiful fall Saturday to brainstorm ideas for highlighting, improving and supporting the local business district. Ideas were plentiful and positive energy was at an all time high. The result: a vision for the community to gather behind and a prioritized list of initiatives that ranged from simple and inexpensive which could be started immediately to those requiring much more work, dedication, money and patience. To see a summary of these initiatives, click here. A special thanks to all who helped to organize it and donated to it - it could not have happened without them!
South Braddock Study - The RSCA acquired a grant to have Vollmer Associates conduct a Strategic Improvement Study that focused on traffic congestion, parking, pedestrian and bicycle safety, and zoning, as well as streetscape and façade improvements. A public kick-off meeting was held on September 23, 2002 to identify in more detail the key issues and concerns of both residents and businesses. After meetings with the RSCA Steering Committee, Vollmer presented preliminary recommendations on the above issues at another public meeting on November 7, 2002. Final recommendations were made public on December 2, 2002 and a final report was presented to the RSCA on January 7, 2003. The S. Braddock Committee is diligently working with local municipalities and the county to see how we can make these improvements a reality. Join the committee! Email contact@regentsquare-RSCA.org. S. Braddock Avenue Committee - The S. Braddock Avenue Committee is working hard to develop a comprehensive plan for S. Braddock Avenue that will serve Regent Square well in the years to come. The Braddock Avenue Improvement Committee has met many times since 2004 and reviewed all of the residents' concerns and suggestions from the February Town Meeting surveys, e-mails, and meetings. Committee members are investigating the feasibility of some of the recommendations. The myriad of suggestions will be categorized and grouped into short and long-term possibilities and will be combined with the Vollmer recommendations. Keep your eyes and ears open for updates and calls for volunteers (we will surely need you)! Thank you all for your input, feedback and remarkably creative ideas. If you have other thoughts, please e-mail them to contact@regentsquare-RSCA.org To read the latest activities of the S. Braddock Avenue Committee, check out the RSCA Newsletters online at http://www.regentsquare-RSCA.org/newsletter.htm Notes About Pedestrian Safety - Understand Pennsylvania law about pedestrians in crosswalks:
Beautification - From flower planting to decisions about where to plant trees donated by the various municipalities, the RSCA is dedicated to continued beautification of our already lovely neighborhood. Join the RSCA Neighborhood Beautification committee. Or join volunteers as they plant flowers each year (email contact@regentsquare-RSCA.org for more information). Parkway Clean-up - A diligent group of volunteers meets on a Saturday morning four times throughout each year -- March, June, September, and November -- to pick up around and clean up the Parkway Ramp entrances and exits to and from Regent Square. Make Regent Square's "first impression" a good, clean one! Contact Barbara Peterson at babs@libcom.com and join the crew. Town Meeting: Safety & S. Braddock Avenue, February 19, 2004 - In response to citizen calls about the fatalities and accidents on S. Braddock Avenue, RSCA President Arch Pelley moderated a discussion at the regular RSCA February meeting on 2-Feb-2004 to collect preliminary citizen input. Over 50 residents attended the meeting to voice their concern. To facilitate direct citizen input about these vital safety issues to all relevant governing bodies, the RSCA moved quickly to organize a Town Meeting that would focus solely on the traffic issues of the South Braddock Corridor and allow residents to voice concerns about recent events directly to local, county and state officials. RSCA then organized a Town Meeting that was held on 19-Feb-2004 at 7PM at the Center for Creative Play. Government officials were present from the four municipalities of Regent Square, along with Port Authority Transit, County and State officials. The February 19th meeting had over 250 residents participating in an active and well moderated discussion. Click here to read about the meeting and its results as reported in the February/March 2004 RSCA Regent Square Newsletter.
