The weather forecast was not inspiring for a spring easter egg hunt. Cold and rain were in the picture - more like a fall day than spring one. But by a quirk of fate, the skies cleared in the late morning and a gentle wind warmed up the environs. The hunt was definitely on!
RSCA board member Kelly O'Brien organized the plastic eggs, bags and easter straw the week before. Betty O'Brien joined in the effort at her home and filled 400 plastic eggs with candy.
On the day of the event, Jon Danzak provided transportation and picture taking; Augie & Felicia Turano loaned a large blow-up chick; Ann Gaul, RSCA Communication Chair, joined to hide eggs and stuff bags with Kelly O'Brien; Julia and Nathaniel Pantalone joined in with their mom, Susan Miller, to help hide eggs and stuff bags with straw; and the Griffin's across the street allowed the RSCA to sneak a power cord to inflate the chick.
It was a great day, about 70 kids collected nearly 300 eggs. Everyone enjoyed the unexpected bit of pleasant afternoon weather. The left over eggs were donated to the Women's Shelter to spread the fun from Regent Square to the kids over there.
A big thanks to everyone who helped with the event. And thanks to everyone who came to enjoy the fun!

Betty O'Brien worked hard to have 400 plastic eggs jam-packed with goodies! She had them all ready and boxed for the big day. |
Betty's faithful dog Dan guarded the cache to make sure no eggs disappeared. |
At 10:00 the "eggmobile" transported the eggs and Kelly O'Brien to the Richmond / Sanders lot. The doors came open and the eggs rolled out! |
Kelly O'Brien starts to distribute the eggs - "Gosh, am I going to get them all out there in time...!" she says.
|
But Ann Gaul, RSCA Communications Chair (pictured right), shows up to pitch in. Kelly and Ann strategize about egg deployment. Over 300 eggs were eventually scattered in the field.
|
Julia (left) and Nathaniel (right) Pantalone came by early with their mom, Susan Miller, to help distribute and hide eggs. Thanks to all that help - the eggs quickly disappeared into the grass! |
Bob Derda made sure that things were clean. Bob's wife, Colleen, worked with the RSCA to get the benches installed at the lot as well as trees and landscaping. The field was in good condition this year because of the reseeding that Colleen and the RSCA worked to accomplish with the City of Pittsburgh last year. |
Augie & Felicia Turano loaned the RSCA a blow-up chick for the event. A power cord snaked across the street to the Griffin household. They were kind enough to let the RSCA 'plug in' and and energize it. |
Susan Miller helps stuff small bags for kids to use to collect the eggs with Easter straw. |
And it all got done in just in time! Folks started to show up near 11:00 for the big event! |
The kids were excited to get there too! They could hardly wait! |
But everyone was well behaved and patient. |
Hurrah! Finally it's start time! Everyone gets in line, picks up their bag, and starts the hunt! |
|
Felicia Turano poses by the large chick; she was really happy that it worked out and couldn't resist posing by it while her husband, Augie, took a picture. Their young one is looking at it wondering...what is it?
|
Quite a few kids drove their own strollers to the event. It was difficult to find a parking spot for them at times. |
This tyke is unstoppable, he's off and running with parents in tow. |
Some parents even tried to sneak in... |
"...maybe I can sneak by and steal that egg over there before they notice....?" |
Some people will go to great lengths for that special shot. |
Everyone had a nice time socializing and watching the kids. |
|
"Gee, dad, that sure is a BIG chick..what's the deal with the funny ears?" |
"..which one should I open first? I'm not sure that I have enough hands!" |
So long until next year! Happy spring holidays to everyone!
