Located at 1400 S. Braddock Avenue in Regent Square, The Center for Creative Play has become a national model in inclusive play and play environments. The CFCP provides a welcome place for kids to experiment with toys, art, computers, books, and more. The CFCP also hosts training sessions, workshops, and family-centered programs. www.cfcp.org Just over a mile north of Regent Square, at 214 N Lexington St , is this very unique resource. Construction Junction specializes in used and surplus building materials. Construction Junction’s mission is to support and promote conservation through the reuse of building materials. It strives to keep usable building materials out of the landfills and provide them to the community at very low cost. The idea for Construction Junction was developed by Pennsylvania Resources Council (the oldest grass roots environmental organization in the state), the Green Building Alliance and Conservation Consultants. Construction Junction is supported by the PRC and is funded in part by the Heinz Endowment and private contributions. It offers certified organic produce and herbs, bulk foods, vitamins and supplements, cruelty-free health and beauty aids, organic and natural packaged goods and hard to find items for special dietary needs. Its Vegetarian Cafe and Juice Bar offer a daily array of hot entrees, soups, salads and vegan dishes. While the Co-op is open to the public and membership is not required to make purchases, members do receive better prices, have access to the EEFC Federal Credit Union, and can vote and serve on the Board of Directors. Clayton, Henry Clay Frick's restored mansion and surrounding grounds, is a magnificent example of a 19th-century Pittsburgh home and includes the family's extensive art collection. In addition to Clayton, visitors can also enjoy an art museum, a car and carriage museum, a greenhouse, a children's playhouse, a visitors' center and shop, and an award-winning café. Entertaining educational programs and music concerts are available year-round for all ages and include the free and extremely popular performances of the First Fridays at the Frick summer series. www.frickart.org
Frick Park Clay Court Tennis Club Tennis enthusiasts have established this club to improve the facilities and promote the sport at the historic red clay tennis courts at Frick Park. Located at Braddock Avenue in Regent Square, these are the only red clay tennis courts in western Pennsylvania. Current projects include signing up prospective players, members and volunteers; obtaining specialized equipment to maintain clay courts; improving the condition of the facilities; and looking for potential donors and sponsors for the all-volunteer club. Its website also has information about health benefits unique to tennis when played on clay courts as opposed to hard courts, and about current USTA plans to promote clay court tennis in the US. The Greater Park Place Neighborhood Association, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and improving the Park Place community and surrounding areas, maintains an electronic bulletin board of community-related events. www.parkplaceblog.com/ Neighbors Unite Wilkinsburg (NUW) is a non-partisan, grassroots effort whose mission is to encourage Wilkinsburg residents’ participation in local government. Its website offers, among other things, information on the duties and responsibilities of the borough’s elected officials, upcoming elections and a calendar of borough and school district meetings. www.nuw.wilkinsburg.org Nine Mile Run Watershed Association Local watershed information, including the stream that runs through Frick Park, is the focus of this website. The City of Pittsburgh and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are collaborating to restore an aquatic ecosystem from Braddock Avenue to the Monongahela River. When the $7.7 million project is complete, citizens will gain access to an additional 100 acres of parkland, for a total of almost 600 acres. The website provides a calendar of events, a description of watershed environments, Nine Mile Run progress, and links to related programs. www.ninemilerun.org To the west of Regent Square, on the other side of Frick Park, is the neighborhood of Squirrel Hill. Its very active business district along Forbes and Murray Avenues offers a wide variety of non-chain shopping and restaurants. The Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition, a non-profit community organization dedicates itself to preserving and improving the quality of both its residential and commercial areas. Its website includes a listing of its various initiatives as well as businesses located in the area. www.shuc.org Whitney Park Neighborhood Association Just to the east of Regent Square is Wilkinsburg’s Whitney Park. Most people don’t know that Nine Mile Run actually flows under Whitney Park. It was put into a culvert and buried years ago, but there is still a small stream in the park. Neighborhood children and their parents enjoy the Park’s playground equipment, baseball field, basketball court, and picnic tables. At the Wilkins Ave entrance, visitors will also enjoy a butterfly garden planted by the Whitney Park Neighborhood Association (WPNA) with the help of the Nine Mile Run Watershed Association. A group of dedicated residents in the surrounding blocks, under the auspices of the WPNA, joins efforts on a regular basis to maintain various aspects of the Park. The inexpensive classes cover a wide variety of interests that appeal to children, adults and seniors. There is wine tasting, oil painting, book discussion groups, martial arts, Yoga, hip hop dance instruction and even Celtic language instruction - just to name a few! The Center also offers the use of its facilities to other organizations such as the Argentine dance club, “Pittsburgh Tangueros” and is also available for rent for private parties and meetings. The Center recently acquired an ADA compliant playground designed by Playworld Systems, Inc. that offers neighborhood children an alternative to Frick Park and helps attract families to the WSCC. The former elementary school building is located at 7604 Charleston Avenue, between Milton St. and S. Braddock Avenue and is maintained by an all-volunteer board of directors. This private website, operated by a Regent Square business owner, includes a listing of neighborhood businesses and services. This promotional and communication website is dedicated to Wilkinsburg. Residents can access government information, an interactive calendar, email accounts, and community bulletin boards.
